Refund Guide
BMW GAP Insurance Refund
Paid off your BMW early? You may be owed a refund on your BMW Ultimate Protection GAP. Whether a refund is automatic depends on state law, the contract, and the payoff process — if you haven't received one, request a written calculation. Here is how to claim your money.
Refund Eligibility
If you pay off your BMW loan early, refinance, trade in, or sell the vehicle before the term ends, you may be owed a prorated refund of the unused GAP charge. Refunds are generally not automatic, so you usually have to request one.
Who Administers BMW GAP
BMW GAP is sold under the BMW Ultimate Protection Program as a waiver added to your retail installment contract. In most states it is a debt-cancellation agreement, not an insurance policy.
BMW GAP is administered by Safe-Guard Products International, LLC (Atlanta, GA), not by BMW Financial Services. BMWFS is only your lender; cancellations and refunds run through Safe-Guard or the selling dealer. Many owners call BMWFS first and are redirected.
- Administrator
- Safe-Guard Products International
- Lender (not the GAP admin)
- BMW Financial Services
- Coverage cap (per dealer materials)
- Up to $50,000; up to $1,000 deductible where allowed
When You Get a Refund
Paid Off Early
Refinanced or paid cash before the loan term ended.
Traded In
Traded your BMW for a new car before loan maturity.
Total Loss
Car was totaled and insurance paid out (even if GAP didn't pay).
Calculate Your BMW Refund
Enter your original contract date and payoff date. Our tool estimates the pro-rata amount you may be owed; your contract and state law control the final figure.
Free calculation · No signup · No card · Optional refund-demand letter only if you act.
Free-Look Window & How the Refund Is Calculated
BMW Ultimate Protection Program contract language cited by multiple sources describes a 30-day full-refund window when no claim has been filed. Your own agreement and your state law control.
After the free-look window, refunds are described as prorated by the unused term, minus a processing fee reported as the lesser of 10% of the price or $50. Confirm the exact method in your contract; some states bar fees or require pro-rata.
When You May Be Owed a BMW GAP Refund
- Paying off the loan early with cash or a refinance
- Trading in or selling the BMW before the loan ends
- A total-loss or theft settlement that closes the loan
- Voluntarily canceling while the loan is active
How to Cancel and Request Your Refund
- 1Gather your VIN, contract date, current mileage, lienholder, and (if paid off) a payoff letter.
- 2Submit a cancellation request to Safe-Guard or the selling BMW dealer F&I office.
- 3Safe-Guard processes the request and routes the refund.
- 4If the loan is still open, the refund goes to the lienholder; if it is paid off, it can be issued to you with proof of payoff.
Where to Send Your Request
- Administrator: Safe-Guard Products International
- Phone: 1-800-742-7896
- Web: safe-guardproducts.com
- BMW Financial Services (loan servicing only): 1-800-578-5000
An informal email is easy to ignore. Our tool generates a formal, itemized refund-demand letter addressed to Safe-Guard Products International or the dealer principal, citing the cancellation as of your payoff date.
Regulatory & Legal Context
The CFPB has flagged auto servicers for not proactively requesting GAP refunds after early payoff (October 2024 Supervisory Highlights). You generally retain the right to cancel and request a refund.
BMW GAP Refund FAQs
Who administers BMW GAP, BMW or someone else?
Safe-Guard Products International administers BMW GAP, not BMW Financial Services. BMWFS is only your lender. To cancel or check a refund, contact Safe-Guard at 1-800-742-7896 or the selling dealer; BMWFS will usually redirect you.
If I refinance my BMW loan, can I get a GAP refund?
Refinancing closes the original contract your GAP waiver is attached to, which may entitle you to a prorated refund of the unused portion. Requesting it soon after the refinance matters, because the refundable amount shrinks as time passes.
Where does the refund go, to me or my lender?
If the loan is still open, the refund is applied to the balance at the lienholder. If the loan is already paid off, it can be issued to you once you provide proof of payoff.
Can I still get a refund if I already used GAP on a claim?
No. Once a GAP benefit has been paid, the coverage is considered used and no premium refund is available.
