Refund Guide
Mercedes-Benz GAP Insurance Refund
Paid off your Mercedes-Benz early? You may be owed a refund on your First Class Guaranteed Auto Protection. Whether a refund is automatic depends on state law, the contract, and the payoff process — if you haven't received one, request a written calculation. Here is how to claim your money.
Refund Eligibility
If you financed a Mercedes, purchased First Class GAP, and then pay off, refinance, sell, or trade in early, you may be owed a prorated refund of the unused premium. Refunds are not automatic and generally route to the lienholder, even after payoff.
Who Administers Mercedes-Benz GAP
First Class GAP applies to financed (retail installment) Mercedes purchases and is administered by Universal Underwriters Service Corporation, a Zurich company. On a Mercedes lease, GAP is a built-in waiver at no separate charge, so there is no separate product to cancel or refund.
Mercedes-Benz Financial Services markets and bills for First Class GAP, but the administrator is Universal Underwriters (Zurich in North America). The product is not available in Colorado or Maryland.

Free-Look Window & How the Refund Is Calculated
No specific free-look window is published by MBUSA or Zurich. Some states mandate one by statute. Check your individual First Class GAP Agreement rather than assuming a fixed number of days.
Mercedes dealers describe a prorated refund based on the lesser of unused time or mileage, less any fees and any claims paid. The exact formula lives in your agreement and is not published publicly.
When You May Be Owed a Mercedes-Benz GAP Refund
- Paying off the financed contract early
- Refinancing, which terminates the original contract
- Selling or trading in the vehicle before the loan ends
- Voluntarily canceling while the loan is active
How to Cancel and Request Your Refund
- 1Contact MBFS or the selling dealer to start a cancellation request.
- 2Submit a written request with VIN, current odometer, contract number, and (if applicable) a payoff letter.
- 3Allow roughly 4-6 weeks for processing.
- 4The refund routes to the lienholder; if the loan is paid off, provide proof so it can reach you.
Where to Send Your Request
- Administrator: Universal Underwriters (Zurich), via MBFS
- Phone: 1-800-654-6222
- Web: mbfs.com
- MBFS Insurance Services: (866) 321-8351, P.O. Box 685, Roanoke, TX 76262
An informal email is easy to ignore. Our tool generates a formal, itemized refund-demand letter addressed to Universal Underwriters (Zurich) or the dealer principal, citing the cancellation as of your payoff date.
Regulatory & Legal Context
The CFPB has flagged auto servicers for not passing through unearned GAP refunds on early termination (October 2024 Supervisory Highlights).
Mercedes-Benz GAP Refund FAQs
I lease my Mercedes. Do I need separate GAP coverage?
No. GAP is built into the First Class Lease as a waiver at no additional purchase price, so there is no separate GAP product to buy, cancel, or refund on a lease. The purchasable First Class GAP product is for financed purchases.
Who actually administers First Class GAP?
Universal Underwriters Service Corporation, a member of Zurich in North America. MBFS markets and collects for the product, but claims and cancellations run through the administrator. Start a cancellation through MBFS at 1-800-654-6222 or your dealer.
I paid off my financed Mercedes early. Where does the refund go?
Early payoff is a recognized trigger for a prorated refund of unearned premium, but Mercedes dealers indicate the refund is paid to the original lienholder, even after payoff. You must request it; refunds are not issued automatically.
